Mother Was Refused Permission To Breast Feed Her Baby

If you are hungrey, you eat, yes? So why can’t babies have the same right?

Paula Stock, 24, of Letzen Road, Canvey, is a Mum to a 5 month old baby boy called Sydney and was left upset and angry when a shop owner refused her permission to breastfeed him when he woke up crying and needed feeding.

Mother Refused Right To Breast FeedMiss Stock was out shopping with her Sister and her Mother and went into the Wedding dress shop to to pick up Sister Rochelle’s £900 wedding dress. She said that when they entered the shop, Sydney was asleep which meant that the young Mum could watch her Sister try on the dress.

But then her baby woke up for a feed and when he became so upset, she asked the staff if it would be OK to breastfeed him. But a member of staff said, “I can’t let you do that, as we have dresses in here that were worth thousands of pounds and you would have to go outside.”

Paula said, “He was absolutely screaming and I needed to get him fed as quickly as I could, so I went back to the car. I was really upset and angry. I felt guilty as well, as I felt I had ruined what should have been something enjoyable for my sister. I would understand the if I had a toddler running around with sticky fingers but breastfeeding is a completely natural thing for women to do. It was a really disgusting way to be treated. There were no other customers in the shop, so it wouldn’t have made other people feel awkward.”

The Equality Act 2010, which covers breastfeeding in public, says it is unlawful for a business to discriminate against a woman because she is breastfeeding.

The shop, in Broomfield Road,Chelmsford, has apologised to Miss Stock and pledged to set aside a suitable area for use by breastfeeding mums.

Lyn Bird is the manager of Bird’s Bridal shop in Chelmsford and has said: “We sincerely apologise for any upset caused. It was totally unintentional to upset Miss Stock. We felt we didn’t have a suitable area due to the lack of space and our own reservations with stock. This certainly will not happen again, because we have given a lot of thought to a suitable area for future use.”
